We had earlier written about YouTube readying it to axe videos that incited violence upon the demand of Senator Joseph I. Lieberman who termed the site to be very open to terrorists. YouTube had earlier shown some responsibility by removing videos that it though were linked to terrorist organizations as well. The current turn of events might very well be the result of this development.
YouTube has banned footages demonstrating weapons that are used to push people into violence on its site in the United Kingdom.
The current step has also been welcomed by Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, who has also asked other online video sharing sites to act responsibly and follow YouTube. This new rule is the first ever step that YouTube has take specifically in the UK to filter out any videos that incite violence. A YouTube spokesman commented at this step saying:
We recognize that there has been particular concern over videos in the UK that involve showing weapons with the aim of intimidation.
This step comes in the wake of increasing violence in the UK among the youth. The spokesman further added:
We have just established a new policy in the UK to prohibit this kind of material, and with the help of our community we’ll continue to work to keep YouTube as a platform for safe and lawful expression.
Although YouTube has always assured that its teams has been vigilant over the content that’s been uploaded, reviewing it to be suitable for the general public. The present step taken by YouTube has also pushed the sources to cal upon other online video platforms to make this a standard practice as well. I guess user’s searches won’t be directed to public beheadings etc.
