Our comments and trackback policy You Link We Follow, You Comment We Promote
Back in 2005, Google evangelized the No Follow tag to be inserted into all links that need not be followed by the Google bot. The links that were immediately designated to default to No Follow in a blog post were the links in the comment and the trackbacks. It was done because a lot of spammers, specially those promoting their medical subscriptions were abusing the public sites like blogs to game the search engines.
The problem was getting compounded by the lack of a reasonable comment spam detector. Due to this bloggers were literally unable to fight back, some responded by turning off comments altogether. All this however changed atleast for Wordpress by the arrival of Akismet. Akismet just simply works, it works such efficiently that I have to rarely delete a comment spam manually. Although it does catches some false positives too, that is some genuine comments also end up being flagged as spam. But this is the price I am happily willing to pay for the hard work that Akismet does for us.
Although the comment and trackback spamming radically changed with the arrival of Akismet, the conventions were never reversed or even re-evaluated for that matter. Wordpress, to this date continues to add No Follow keywords to all the comments and trackbacks, effectively making those links irrelevant for the search engines. This has continued to take away the credit from the sites that genuinely write good stuff and link back to others. It also deprives the commentators who go the extra mile to write a meaningful comment on a post.
In the light of all this, we have decided to announce our new Trackback and Commenting policy which could be stated in one sentence as “You link we follow, you comment we promote”. We have installed the Wordpress DO Follow plugin for comments and trackbacks, and from now on would be following all trackbacks and comment links. This means that if you want your site to have a link on Startup Meme, you could just do that on your own by linking to a Startup Meme story and the trackback on Startup Meme would become a plain old vanilla link to your site. In addition to this we would also be displaying the ten most recent trackbacks and comments in our sidebar with links back to the originating site. Furthermore, the top ten commentators and linking sites would also have their time in the limelight. This would put your site or comment in front of the thousands of Startup Meme readers. Information about our traffic stats could be found here and here.
This is our little contribution in response to your efforts to build Startup Meme into a vibrant and active community on Startups.
PS: Please keep in mind that with the new changes we would be aggressively going after any person or site, whom we find to be spamming Startup Meme.

This is a great idea. Those startup sites that installed nofollow have lost already. Many serious posters have a website and prefer to promote it. The internet is full of interesting sites such as starupmeme and why would someone bother posting and reading on a site with nofollow when they can use their energy on one which doesn’t have that.
Quiet true and totally agreed. We have a totally open and promotionist policy over at Startup Meme… So enjoy the party while it lasts
Well I’m actually working on 4 start up sites right now. One from quite a big company, and none of them use nofollow. I would rather have forum rules limiting spam than discourage visitors. Google wants to discourage links on blogs because there is too much for them to control, good, people like us will just have our links gain value. Anyway congrats on the nice site and I look forward to reading more of your articles.
Glad to know you like our website, stay tuned!
I found your link from google’s own no follow blog. This is great and more blogs should do this to encourage activity.
I like youtube. It would be great if I can see the following important moments in the Beijing 2008. I hope Youtube will have this for viewers:-
1. The nine year old girl who did lip syncing.
2. The Chinese athlese who withdraw because of right foot injury, he disapointed everyone. But it is okay, he can try again in next Olympic.
3. The moment the Jamaican runner do a bit dancing after he won. I think it is acceptable to do a bit dancing, everyone express their happiness in a different way. There is nothing wrong about it. As long as what he did was not hurting someone else feeling. I want to see his Jamaican dancing after he knew he won the world record.
Hi webmaster!
That sounds so good and could you please elaborate the idea of tracking and linking back for some newbies like me? That would be a great help too.
Thanx
Very good initiative indeed and would be much appriciated if you further explain the concept of tracking and linking back to newbies like myself.
It has been suggested that installing the Wordpress DO Follow plugin for comments and trackbacks is one of the best marketing moves bloggers can make. Thank you for making the decision to add it to your blog!
Warmly,
Ron
P.S. Let’s talk about you coming on my BlogTalkRadio show soon.
You’re doing a great job here, encouraging interaction between bloggers. More power!
Great job!

though the akismet have done a good job of preventing the spam.it is also possible that a healthy and valuable comment is deleted and hence the you comment we promote is a good idea.
