Oil prices per barrel are on the rise as it is a non-renewable resource and nations make their living on it. But Yahoo increasing its charges for domain registration sounds more of a sudden burst in greed.
A thread at WebmasterWorld has reported that the price is said to be set at $34.95 effective from July 1, 2008. What could possibly be the reason for such an action save for a desperate measure to increase revenues (Is it planning to launch its own space program?).
Yahoo with this new rate is going to charge thrice the amount most companies are charging and in the market where money matters most, Yahoo is very likely going to loose business, resulting in those left, paying even more heavily and the cut back in the staff. The other reason could possibly be that Yahoo is no more interested in doing this and wants to set prices high enough that everyone has no option but to call it quits.
The other thought that comes into my mind after this desperate measure of Yahoo is (though pretty far fetched) that they are probably in to raise fund to finance some war. Who knows? I would recommend Yahoo to reconsider its decision (if it really plans to implement it).
