WiX is an online application, completely made in Flash ( and when we say completely, we really mean it! ). With WiX you can create websites for free and easily through the easy to use but overcrowded WiX editor. But remember the websites are made in Flash so it’s easy to go overboard with them and not care about the bandwidth effects.
Just opening the homepage really wowed us and it was quiet obvious that they’re experts at Flash content. The account creation is public and just a 2 click process and you’re in. After that the clearly labelled buttons guide you on what to do. We’d advise you to take the helpful tour first to get a better understanding of the workings of WiX so you wont lose your way like we did in the editor.
Clicking on Create will launch the WiX editor, Explore lets you explore your already made websites, comments and widgets by other users on WiX, and My Account lets you edit your profile, settings and access to your MyAccount Library, where you can see the content you’ve created.
The WiX editor is very bandwidth unfriendly, so if you’ve got a slow connection you can say byebye to this website. The editor has a nice animation leading to the startup and you would be seeing it for a long time if you’re on a slow connection. So, beware!
The editor is very much like the OS X interface. It has a menu bar on top and a dock at the bottom, which changes based on the selection. It houses various functions like Animations, Effects, Settings, Behaviors to name a few. You can add animations and effects to almost anything as the whole interface is based on Flash and change the colors to your liking as well. You can also import your media from Flickr and Youtube to use in your website as well as upload your own content.
There is also an option on the right toolbar called fun. Which isn’t really going to serve any business professionals aiming to use WiX, not even young people but young teenagers who like to ‘pimp their websites’ with all sort of widgets and flashy animations. There is also a huge amount of clipart and other ready made content for just dragging and dropping on to the website and using them. Also, another option on just every element is to flip, rotate, move backward or forward.
Another interesting feature by WiX is the inclusion of flash comments on websites. Which are just like the comments you make on MySpace, with the difference being that they’re all in Flash. This brings a whole new level of interactive comments ( along with browser slow downs! ).
Although WiX will please more kids like Piczo did, it is a very unique website creation online application ( quiet a mouthful isn’t it? ). Do give it a try, if you’ve been in love with Yahoo! Geocities, Homstead, Piczo and the likes as WiX is like a whole new next generation Web 2.0 version of free website creation websites!
