Well Yahoo might not be Giant enough to battle Microsoft, but it has definitely shown that it can make news by pulling off development of Yahoo Messenger for Vista. This doesn’t mean all those users who already have the instant messaging software installed will have to say goodbye to it. The point here is that they’ll be having no more updates coming their way from the Yahoo development center.
Yahoo messenger for Vista was one of the earliest and only programs, custom made for the Vista environment and offered graphic rich interface for the Yahoo addicts. In Sarah Bacon, Product Manager wrote in the messenger blog:
Yahoo! Messenger for Vista will be no longer available for download from the Yahoo! Messenger website. We have discontinued stand-alone releases of the Yahoo! Messenger for Vista
Terrell Karlsten also had a few words munched out to CNET:
Yahoo has made the strategic decision to discontinue external releases of the stand-alone Yahoo Messenger for Vista client and focus on delivering one Windows experience that is optimized for Windows users today.
I think it’s a good decision on behalf of Yahoo as it wasn’t something unique they were vesting their time and energy in. I didn’t see a point in developing a Vista specific messenger for almost a year when they had to pull it off. And the new client, Yahoo Messenger 9.0 is itself pretty intense, given the interface that really grips the user. Terrell further added:
Moving forward we encourage Vista users to download our full-featured Yahoo Messenger 9.0 client; which is compatible with XP and Vista….
I hope this doesn’t piss Ballmer off and he shouts again that Microsoft isn’t going to go for the Yahoo talks.
