Vulnerability of Mozilla Firefox 3.0

Sardar Mohkim Khan

Firefox 3.0 With the launch of Firefox and its record setting downloads in 24 hours, there was a report of a certain critical vulnerability to Mozilla (ZDI-CAN-349). With downloads far exceeding the 8 million mark, there is suspicion over the reported case being the first vulnerability in the latest version of the popular open source browser.

The vulnerability has been reported since the clock tipped five hours off the Zero Day, and it has been affecting not just Firefox 3.0 but the prior versions of Firefox 2.0 as well. This was reported to the Mozilla security shortly after it was confirmed. The problem that lies here is that it enables the exploitation of the flaw by hackers who can use it to execute codes. However user interaction is required for this to be executed/exploited by visiting a malicious site or clicking a link in an email.

The patch is eagerly awaited as Mozilla works upon the problem and hopefully the issue will be solved pretty soon given Mozilla’s previous record of keeping up with such problems.
