Twitly is Yahoo Groups for Twitter, well almost if Twhirl lends hand

twitly logo Twitly is a new service that lets you create groups on twitter. All you need to do is to first sign in to Twitly itself and than sign into your twitter account from Twitly, yeah its confusing you’ll have to sign in twice to make the service work.

Once that’s done you can make a group on Twitly by entering a name for the group in the “create a new group” text box in the right sidebar and hit enter. Once that’s done you could simply click on the group and add any person whom you have already following to that group.

I created a group named Bloggers and added Paris Lemon, Center Networks and Andy Beal into it. When you have filled your group with some people you would be able to see their tweets in that group.

This is a pretty handy feature for people who follow a lot of people all of whom belong to different groups like friends, family, professional, clients, bloggers and so on. The feature cuts through the noise and you could focus on a specific category at a time. You can think of it to be similar to labels in Gmail and folders in Yahoo Mail.

Twitly could get in touch with the guys at Twhirl and add the support to send mass tweets to everyone in a specific group, this would turn twitly into a Yahoo Group for Twitter.

I am both excited and afraid about this application. Excited because this could make twitter a lot more usable for the rest of us and afraid because twitter can easily copy this functionality and offer it as a built in feature leaving Twitly to die in the cold.
