comScore Media Matrix has published a list of the top 50 U.S. Web Properties for June 2008. Although the stats show that the time spent per user has declined by 4%, which is attributed to vacations. Schools are also off, so that has counted a lot for increases in traffic to travel websites. Apart from this, leisure websites have seen a lot of gain, which again is because of vacations.
Recent blockbuster movies also drove a lot of traffic to movie sites, and since more are on the way, this trend would probably continue all summer.
Several summer blockbusters reached theaters in June, driving a 2-percent gain to the entertainment – movies category. IMDB.com (Internet Movie Data Base) led the category with 20.8 million visitors, followed by Moviefone (15.6 million visitors) and Yahoo! Movies (15.2 million visitors). Interest in Disney’s summer blockbuster Wall-E drove a 24-percent gain to Disney Movies (4.7 million visitors), while the release of Kung Fu Panda resulted in a 182-percent gain to DreamWorks SKG (1.4 million visitors).
Online gaming has also increased as well as traffic to online gaming websites, such as Yahoo Games, EA Online and Disney Games.
Google still maintains number 1 spot in the Top Properties ranking but it has narrowly escaped losing its first spot to Yahoo! Sites. Microsoft Sites rank at number 3 where as Apple moved up two positions to number 10 due to the iPhone craze amongst customers. Disney Online and Adobe also jumped four spots up to numbers 21 and 22, respectively.
The trends aren’t surprising at all, as the summer is mostly focused on traveling and leisurely activities. Amongst social networks, Facebook landed at number 15 in the Top Properties rankings, where as Fox Interactive Media, the owner of MySpace, ranks at number 5, although Facebook has beaten MySpace in the social network number 1 position.
