The Shanghai Processors Are Here – AMD catching upto Intel

Sam

opteron_12-11-2008-23-16-40 Recently I reported about the the new Intel i7 Nehalem Cores based on 45nm technology. And today AMD launched it’s competitor to Intel, the “Shanghai” Quad Core 45nm  Opteron Processors, designed to deliver superior virtualization experience, performance and power efficiency.

Shanghai has a 35% increase in power efficiency and performance, triple the cache and higher clock speeds. In the first quarter, AMD is scheduled to deliver HyperTransport 3, a technology that AMD claims will significantly boost communication speeds between silicon. These vast changes would definitely put AMD ahead and in the limelight fro the increasing virtualization support for major companies and users.

Prices for Shanghai, which will be sold under the Opteron brand, range from $377 to $989 for the 2000 series and from $1,165 to $2,149 for the faster 8000 series. Major computer makers planning to ship Shanghai-powered products include Dell (Dell), Hewlett-Packard(NYSE: HPQ) and IBM (NYSE: IBM) to make sure that there are plenty of “Shanghai” Opteron-ready platforms.

It’s certainly the product to beat in the market, and computer manufacturers will see that as well.

It is certain that AMD needs to do some magic to get into competing zone against Intel and surely Shanghai can be one such product to boost AMD’s market share. What do you think, will AMD be successful in it’s venture?
