China, which contains the world’s highest number of internet users, has blocked the site of The New York Times. Users from different cities of China including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, when tried to access the site, were greeted with a message saying that the site is unavailable. According to the State Information Office, it had no information on the issue.
This week the Foreign Ministry said that the country maintains the right to block websites which contains illegal content under the Chinese law. In August, the Chinese government eased restriction on internet during the Beijing Olympics.
According to AsiaWeek, earlier this month the Chinese version of the BBC, VOA (Voice of America) and Hong Kong media Ming Pao News were also blocked.
