TechCrunch is no small name in the writing business, but at times things appear more of a turn off. I appreciate the 'little effort' they made, but it could have been much better, if the need to actually honour/celebrate the day was much so needed. At least they did something to show support for the pirate day, instead of doing nothing for it, as millions of other websites didn't. That's great that Google did it, and I don't really consider them imitating by doing it also.f I understand it's hard to become a great writer on the internet frontier, but way too many people criticize and belittle the smallest of things just to incur more readers.
