TC 50: Sekai brings Social Tagging to your iPhone

image thumb142 TC 50: Sekai brings Social Tagging to your iPhone Sekai Camera, a startup that launched at TC 50, has created an iPhone based social tagging service that allows users to tag the world using their iPhones. Sekai Camera is a Japanese word for World Camera. The service is developed by Tonchidot, a mobile application provider based in Tokyo, Japan.

Sekai allows users to turn their iPhones into an information terminal, adding tags generated by Tonchidot to the real world. In addition to this the service fetches information from other web services to add to the information. This fetching of information from other sources has almost become ubiquitous now, since I have rarely come across a startup that doesn’t do this.

The way the system works is simple, you just take your iPhone and walk through the town. You might enter a mall in the process and your iPhone will display the location of coffee shop, or pharmacy in the mall to you on your iPhone in the form of tags.

The company has provided much information on the inner workings of the system, but it sure is an aid in your grocery shopping, or just plainly a handy service of have in your iPhone. The one thing that the company did disclosed was the fact that they are not using any image recognition technique or the likes.
