Gazopa, an image search engine that launched at TC 50, wants to do the same thing with Image Search that VideoSurf wants to do with Video Search – make tagging a relic of the past.
Gazopa does this by employing a proprietary image processing technology (ok we just know this much about it) to extract image information such as color, shape and size of the image. This information is used to match and fetch similar images from a pool of about 50 million images from around the world wide web.
Once you know what Gazopa does you would be able to understand the usage of the system quickly. All you need to do in order to use the search engine is to provide it with the image that you want to find out. This would be similar to providing the barn owner a sample of the needle that you might have lost in the haystack. In case you dont even have this sample you could search for it using a keyword on Gazopa and than click on a similar looking image to let the search engine know what you are after. Once all this is done Gazopa takes little time to present you with images that might be similar to what you are looking.
The image search concepts could be extended to video search since all videos are nothing but photo images tied together and moved passed our eyes at a certain speed. In case of a movie you could just point to a thumbnail and Gazopa would be able to find videos on the web that contained similar thumbnails and hence similar scenes.
Gazopa also allows you to draw a certain photo in a flash – based drawing area, just in case the image you want to search is just a creation in your mind. Once your drawing is complete, Gazopa scans and identifies it and gets onto its task of finding similar images for you, if they exist in the real web.
The panelists at TC 50, had this question tingling their brain cells that whether or not Gazopa is a real thing or if it would only make sense with other services like Comparison Shopping service or the likes.
The company is based in Japan and is backed by Hitachi.
