Facebook and Social Startups Meme.

I guess everyone is having news about wrong stuff on Facebook. Come on, wasn’t this the month of love? I have covered quite a lot of news in the last week or so talking about people being murdered or committing suicide all the way to people being fired for letting kids enter a no entry zone and putting up pictures on the social network. Today another similar news has been circling the Web talking about a 19 year old kid being sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The kid has been accused of blackmailing more than half a dozen teen, forcing them to indulge in sexual activity/acts. How insane, the kid asked other teens to take naked pictures posing as girls and then used the same to blackmail them into perform indecent acts with him. I just don’t feel any sorrow for this youngster, given that many of those kids he blackmailed have been hospitalized. The fear is of course the same that they might harm themselves or even try to commit suicide.

While MySpace goes along cutting down staff upon realizing it has overgrown in numbers with a stagnant business, Facebook keeps minting something, be it cash or features. Today Facebook launched Fan Box to help celebrities connect with their fans on the social network. With this artists can place the widget right on their websites that shows their Facebook status, the number of fans they have and the Become a Fan button. This is definitely a huge step forward to help fans and celebrities better collaborate with each other as well as help celebrities leverage their massive fan following on the social network to market their work. That’s more like giving celebrities more control over their fanbase and is Facebook worried? Not at all, as long as everything is being done the Facebook way.

Here comes a new CFO at Facebook, as the social network names David Ebersman to take the position. David had been a former CFO at Genentech and will take place of Gideon Yu, who was relieved off his duties almost three months back. With more than decade and a half of experience, David comes equipped with all the skills to boost Facebook’s ever expanding empire.
