ImageShack Logo
ImageShack, a photo sharing site used by people to host their images to be displayed on their social networking profile pages has added video uploading and sharing capability

ImageShack is claiming that their video hosting feature is more advanced than the ones offered by Youtube, Revver and others, since ImageShack will pre-process your video on your system instead of first uploading it to their servers and then processing it their. The pre-processing involved file compression which could reduce a file by nearly five times its original size making the file uploads a much quicker and less bandwidth consuming task.

Flickr Logo
Multiple sources are reporting that Yahoo has decided to pull the plug on Yahoo Photos in favor of Flickr, a photo sharing service they acquired in March 2005.

Although Yahoo Photos still massively trails flickr, hosting 2 billion photos against Flickr’s 500 million, but the growth of Yahoo Photos has stalled or rather declined during the past year. From April 2006 to April 2007 visitors to Flickr rose by 22% whereas Yahoo Photos lost 60% of its user traffic according Hitwise Intelligence.

Scribd Logo
Scribd a YCombinator funded company is making big splash recently. GigaOm is reporting that investors are jumping each other’s shoulders in order to put their money into this startup. According to Om a VC wanted to invest $5 million in the company at a valuation of $10 million, an offer the company passed. Redpoint Ventures however is rumored to have put in a substantial amount in the startup at a valuation of $20 million.

I wrote about Scribd previously in a post titled “Scribd is Youtube for Documents, Literally“, detailing how Scribd is a youtube for documents when it comes to community features, ease of use, sharing and embedding support and the ability for users to upload and enjoy copyrighted content.

Thinkfree logo
Thinkfree, a web based office suite, has announced the launch of ThinkFree API, that will enable websites and blogs to post or host office documents on their own servers, where end users can just launch the file in the browser and make changes then and there.

The launch is in sync with Google´s announcement that they will be launching Google Presently shortly to complete their online office offering. It seems that Google is definitely not the only player gunning for the MS Office market, in fact it does not even have a complete offering till now. Thinkfree has not only made a complete online office suite having all components in the form of Thinkfree Write, Thinkfree Calc, and Thinkfree Show, but are now moving ahead to make an ecosystem around their offering by allowing developers to create exciting new applications on top of these documents and to use them in their own hosted applications.

yoono-logo
Yoono, a startup based in France that allows users to share websites and online articles with others much like StumbleUpon, has launched a new service called “Buzz It”. The new service is similar to what Grouptivity, Clipmarks and Share2Me already offer.

Buzz It is a browser applet that lets users capture text, links, images and video while they browse the web. Users can then use these clippings to post to blogs, social networks or just share it on their Yoono Buzzlog, which can then be made public or private. Yoono already offered browser suggestions as you visit various websites just like StumbleUpon, and is claiming to have more than 600,000 registered users. Hitchsters
Hitchsters, a NYC based company has launched a service that connect air travelers for shared taxi rides. The service allows people to sign up and once a match is made both of them are notified via sms and email messages containing the first name and cell phone number of the other cab mate. The first person to leave pays 60% of the fare till that point, including tolls, while the other one will pay the rest of the fare plus the tip. If both people are sharing the taxi to the same destination then both of them will pay 60% of the fare, with the additional 20% going towards tip. Hitchsters also allows you to opt for gender preferences of your co-rider.

The company was founded out of frustration of rising cab expenses by NYC attorney Terry Crawford and his wife. The service will soon be launched in Boston and Brooklyn.

Thinkfree Logo
ThinkFree, a startup that is competing with Google Docs and Spredsheets and Zoho and in the online office space has just released a plugin, Viewer that will enable Wordpress bloggers to embed MS Office docs, spreadsheets and presentations in their blogs. The embeded docs could then be viewed by users without the need to have Office or Acrobat. This is certainly another small effort to make office redundant.

Another major feature enhancement is the release of Viewer API that will allow developers to integrate and mashup with ThinkFree into new and exciting applications. With the uptake of this API we will be seeing documents, spreadsheets and presentations on websites way too often, without the use to even download them. Some examples could be viewed here. I however would still want to have these documents embedded in my posts as a widget.

Scribd Logo
When Techcrunch first reviewd Scribd, they called the service a “Youtube for Documents” and indeed Scribd is turning out to be a Youtube for documents in more ways than one.

Just as on Youtube, Scribd for the first time has made it dead simple to share documents with people at large. The User Interface, comments, tagging and ratings are similar to Youtube if not a blatant copy. Just as Youtube, Scribd´s internal dynamics encourages copy right violations and they are adopting similar tactics to cope with it “We will take it down, if and when you will ask us to do so”, but till than it won’t hurt us to ride on the traffic generated by such documents. And last but not least posting and viewing could be done anonymously, so no one can catch you for any violations what so ever.
