All this hype, all this investment from Microsoft to promote Bing, its new Search Engine. I just hope this turns out big for Microsoft’s product after the firm has spent a reported $100 Million campaign. Presently, reports state that we will be seeing a live infomercial on Hulu which has been titled; Bingathon. The show will be aired on June 8th at 8 PM EST and will be hosted/star Olivia Munn and Jason Sudeikis with appearances from numerous other celebrities. Now all the publicity is good, but it just doesn’t make sense. Why would Microsoft so desperately glamorize Bing?

I find Microsoft quite a hypocrite, now that it has made Bing the default search engine on the Internet Explorer 6. Hypocrite because they have time and again stated that they will not monopolize on its reputation as being the leading provider of computing OS as well as leading the browser market. What’s even worse is that users cannot switch to another search engine have been useless and each time they do, an error message is displayed. While the IE6 may not be used by all to browse the web, but still almost 20% of Internet users make use of the browser. I am not sure why Microsoft would implement the idea of default is power, maybe it needs to juice in maximum visitors from its prime browser for the much promised search engine, Bing. Those of you still using IE6 can switch to better and more secure browsers like Chrome, Firefox, IE8, etc.
Looks like Search Engines are the in thing these days. Earlier this week, Wolfram Alpha launched its computational search engine and today Microsoft is set to release its very own search engine codenamed Kumo. I don’t know how effective this is going to be, but the coming of these entrants in the search market have given something else to talk about other than Google. Google has continued its expansion in every direction and it appears it has everything in grasp from features to using its algorithm to assist its HR and the only wall it has to climb is real time search. We aren’t aware of what exactly is Kumo about as it remains clouded but lets hope against all hope that Microsoft’s Kumo might have any significant impact on the search market.
