I was wondering earlier yesterday that there was something about to happen Gmail as I experienced the slowness of the Reader and it did as reports hurled in of another Gmail outage. I am not sure why exactly that happened or to be precise why does it happen so frequently? Perhaps it has something to do with the countless servers being overlapped, where duplication at one place might take the entire thing down but then doesn’t Google have an efficient request system? Well whatever the case be, Google’s Engineering VP, Ben Treynor says it was all due to a scheduled maintenance. Great! They perform maintenance right at the time when people are bound to be using the service a lot and given that Gmail is now used by a vast majority, one can guess how troubling it would have been for everyone.

Twitter had a terrible day and it wasn’t just Twitter, but other social services including Facebook suffered the same. Though the downtime that Facebook went through wasn’t as prolonged it did affect quite a lot. Reports held a massive DDOS attack responsible for the downtime and both Facebook and Twitter are trying to figure out the real cause behind this. I guess the outage was quite sporadic at Facebook unlike Twitter where it was much widespread (as usual).
