Nokia is back… once again with a series of smartphones set to hit the markets by Christmas. I think the cell phone manufacturing goliath might very well be anticipating to give the likes of Apple’s iPhone, Google’s Android phones and the BlackBerry smartphones. The entire Nokia management is confident about Symbian 3 taking its mobile devices to the next level.
The new devices set to be released are the E7, C6 and C7 as well as the Nokia N8. And be sure that the cell phone maker crashed heavily on Apple, with Steve Job’s allegations of the Nokia devices having the Antennagate issue as well, just like the iPhone 4. First up with Apple shamelessly stealing the Nokia Phrase Connecting People and using it to market their own iPhone. That was absolutely lame of Apple in the first place. The smartest folks at Apple can design a revolutionary hardware and a mobile operating system but can’t create their own slogan and catchy phrases.
The Apple Music Event is just short of a few hours and knowing that we have been talking about it a lot for the last couple of weeks. But we can’t help but talk more. Primarily because news and rumors will keep popping out until Steve Jobs takes the stage and starts off disclosing things or products at the event. You can watch the Live Stream at Apple.
The Live event starts streaming at 10:00 AM PT but it will only be available for Mac users. Meaning this would require Mac running the Snow Leopard or a device running the iOS 3.0 or higher. I am not surprised given that only Apple lovers will be interested in watching the stream more than their PC counterparts. However in my opinion it’s quite a poor tactic, of course I understand we must consider ourselves lucky that Apple has changed its tradition and actually throwing up a Live Coverage, but why deprive others? Anyways that’s Apple’s own decision and I know it wont hurt them to not stream this to PC users.
With another daily addition of blast from the past, we go back one year to explore what made news on this date last year. Yahoo, Google, iPhone, Microsoft and Apple dominated tech news on our blog. As always we must have missed out news that was circling the Web and would appreciate if our readers can share the same with us in comments.
This is a new segment we are testing at Startup Meme. The purpose is simply to keep an eye on what was the news that mattered a year back on the particular dates. We will only be posting links to posts along with their headings so that it is easier for our readers to follow whichever news they find interesting.
We would welcome any and all feedback regarding this move and appreciate it if you can take time and share your opinion. Lets revisit history!
There are some interesting stats coming out as Ofcom them today. According to them almost 20% of children aged below 12 are part of a social network, be it Twitter, MySpace of Facebook. I am a bit surprised as almost all these social networks lay emphasis that you need to be 13 and above to be a member of these social networks. But stating the obvious here, there isn’t any way you can determine how old is a person online.
A similar survey was carried out in October last year and according to it almost 40% of users between 5 and seven visited the site. I am not sure how authentic are these but I can trust these as 4 of my cousins aged below 10 visit the site, not that they have an account on Facebook. Again the issue isn’t with using these social networks but that these sites have given rise to all sorts of issues, from content that is adult, inappropriate all the way to virus, malware, scams, etc. This is quite a concern that needs to be addressed for the good of kids. You can definitely keep a watch on kids and control their use, but there is no way you can ensure that only the appropriate content is accessible.
Am I attracting too much negativity towards myself that I more often come across bad news? The latest report is of the growing cases of Syphilis and the reason put forward by the medical experts is the highly influential Social networking site Facebook. The number of cases have gone up from less than a dozen in 2008 to over 30 last year. I find it pretty believable, given there are so many cases where women fall prey to sex offenders. That is just one of the many reasons. The other is how people on the social networking site try to hook up with the opposite sex for causal sex.
Not all are of course because of this, but social networking sites are one reason for this. According to the same report, one in every four cases suffers from this owing to social networks, where they are constantly in search of being intimate with the opposite gender. To make the situation worse their activities are unprotected. The numbers provided are for Durham, Teesside and Sunderland and if it is really so widespread already, I bet the same would grow further in other regions.
Oh so the News industry thinks that Google is eating its piece of cake in huge chunks, especially Rupert Murdoch who thinks Content should be hidden from the Search Engines. Why? Well because there is no such thing as Free News! Well I don’t care about the content being free or not, but Google alone sends these news sites more than 4 Billion hits a month. Now all that promotion and hits are being done via search and if some half brained fool actually accepts Murdoch’s idea and puts an iron curtain on content from these sources, News itself would take a huge chunk worth 4 billion clicks from its share.
So what exactly is wrong with this? Well to be honest, if the point is journalists and agencies working hard and spending cash to put quality content online, these agencies can make a fortune out of those hits. So the missing link is the obvious bad advertising that makes them all feel the pinch. Alright I don’t side with actually putting the content out and about for free for every Tom, Dick and Harry, but hey that is where you get all the promotion from. The idea to limit free views per person to five sounds good enough, at least this would give consumers a chance to actually read and judge if the content is really worth what they want before they actually subscribe. Tell the truth here, how many of you would actually pay for a subscription if all you could decide on was one page?
Interesting news rolling on BBC while I write this. Google has has bowed to Publishers and it might be forced into going easy on the content and limit the view to quality content from news publishers. I guess it has more to do with Google Books that have been targeted by publishers all across as it many think it robs them off the rightful loyalty. But I guess the nail in the coffin can very well turn out to be Rupert Murdoch’s idea to make news invisible to search and statements which include that the quality content should not be available for free.
