The year 2010 is coming to an end and everyone has a different approach on how they close the year. Twitter in the social media space just released a new site altogether; Year in Review to showcase what has been happening on Twitter throughout 2010.

I am not going to call it a micro messaging service for I simply consider it to be undermining the true potential of the tool, albeit that’s what it is at the core. I recall hating it and avoiding it at all costs and finally getting more than just addicted to it. The site will be updated in the days to come, in the meanwhile you can definitely visit another one which showcases the New folks who joined Twitter.

Looks as if the micromessaging service, Twitter is taking advertising seriously. Reports today state that folks at Twitter have bolstered their ad platform by hiring Dan Coughlin who had been with Facebook since 2006. Coughlin will take charge as the Director of Sales for Eastern Region in the US.

That wasn’t the only notable induction as Twitter also fished Amanda Levy of Yelp. She will be taking position as Director of Sales in the Western Region, bringing over 5 years of experience to the Twitter ad team. Both have a good number of years to back their selection, with Coughlin who was the director of media sales, Facebook, and prior to this, held the same position at Yahoo for over 5 years. This is of course other than his stints at MarketWatch and DoubleClick. Levy on the other hand was Yelp’s first salesperson, where she headed sales for Yelp at the West Coast.

20 billion tweets on Twitter and still counting, that is what Twitter has achieved since its inception. The stats have been put forth by GigaTweet and the micromessaging service has added more than five billion tweets in the last two months. Evident enough to show how the activity levels on the service have increased by leaps and bounds.

While GigaTweet can be considered as an unofficial source, Twitter itself had earlier mentioned it’s user base is increasing phenomenally with over 50 million users joining the network daily. I have been a late adopter of Twitter and what I have observed in this duration is that the service has become more than just a shameless marketing tool to something that has more conversations building around it. Plus another thing that accelerated it has been its placement across every site out there [even our blog].

The major reason why I haven’t moved over to Posterous is simple; I found it extremely impossible to transfer existing content over to it. Not just me, I guess the issue is same with many, especially those on various platforms which are getting annoyingly difficult to manage. Perhaps they have become too outdated or are greedy to fill each of your page with ads. Well Posterous is capitalizing on that by letting you import your content over to its platform.

This is happening round the clock for the next 15 days [read update] and irrespective of what platform you are on, Posterous is all embracing. Err, isn’t way too eager to have you shift over?

It began as Twitter for businesses but Yammer is definitely doing a better job when it comes to introducing new features. Recently the service made it easier for its users to add notifications about unread messages with numerous ways the service is accessed. Sounds great, something which is rightly missed in Twitter, I mean Twitter’s desktop clients like Seesmic and TweetDeck do have those notifications but there is no way this can be done from Twitter itself. I hope Twitter makes a note on this and integrates something similar too.

It was only a matter of time before it had to happen, or at least begin happening. Australia’s Griffith University thinks its quite important to have Twitter as part of its curriculum for journalism. We have seen the importance of Twitter when it comes to breaking news, we saw it with the Earthquakes and the Elections, when everything else couldn’t provide us with information. This isn’t just Twitter, there has been a growing emphasis on the need for prospective employees to be well versed with Social Media, which shows that it is no more just about connecting with people but also about sharing information and news globally. I am happy to read this, primarily because i emphasis a lot on making more out of Twitter than just tweeting.
