The bruises and scars of the recession are going to take a lot of time to heal and while it heals, it will give more wounds to many. Today Sprint announced that it will be be saving around $350 Million in the fourth quarter and to achieve this it will be be laying off employees. The number of these layoffs will be between 2,000 to 2,500 and this round of layoffs will be completed by December 31 this year. The mobile carrier has already shut down 27 call centers given a phenomenal fall in call volume. Sad for the employees, especially those who will end a year with a layoff. Hope the new year brings glad tidings for them.

The much famed startup, 23andMe whose founder is Sergey Brin’s wife that exists with a purpose to make human DNA searchable is in some trouble. The startup after raising a healthy $3.9 Million from Google is planning a few layoffs. There has been no confirmation or clue as to how many of the employees will have to leave but there will be certain reduction in staff. But to be honest the startup has a bright future and perhaps will be one of the most widely used services in a decade or two.
This comes after quite some time, the news of layoffs in numbers as Sun might show the exit to around 3,000 employees. This would take their total layoffs to 9,000, following the six thousand it did last year. This all happens while it is in acquisition talks of Oracle. The layoffs will take place across the globe and chances are there will be more layoffs once the acquisition actually completes.
Our ears are ringing with a rumor that AOL is set to initiate another round of cuts. We aren’t sure what number of employees it will be laying off or not but that number can be close to what it has already made in the recent past. If this rumor is correct, AOL might announce these layoffs within this week. Anyone out there who has a clue?
Layoffs strike Sony as it waved goodbye to 41 of its employees, which makes around 5% of its workforce. The layoffs as usual have been made to cut down cost and improve operational efficiency. Sony had indicated that it would make major cuts in its workforce in its attempt at restructuring as profits continue to plunge. If that number makes one feel sad, save that till next year as Sony speeds up its plans to layoff more by next year.
TokBox, the video chat startup appears to be in trouble as reports state that the startup is firing 50% of its staff. The startup, though had raised around $14 Million in various rounds of funding but has had troubles with its management. TokBox has changed its CEOs thrice in a very short period and there is barely a founder left in its team now. I guess it’s planning out some re-organization and that there TokBox is looking forward to hiring new people.
We have talked about Evite quite often, today the service announced laying off 9 members of its 38 employees. Along with the layoffs the firm also announced a reorg as it named Hans Woolley, co-founder Pronto as its President. Amongst those laid off are its GM, Rosanna McCollough and VP of Marketing Lariayn Payne.
Fox Interactive Media continues to shed weight on its budget as it laid off close to 75 employees across its properties. Gladly enough those weren’t from MySpace, which has seen a lot of that already. However, Photobucket suffered the most as it lost about a third of its 120 employees. We aren’t sure if this is the last of the layoffs we hear as its fiscal year comes to an en on June 30 and hope they don’t make some more cuts just till then.
