You call it luck or good timing, Sohaib Akhtar of Pakistan might not have known that he would be a part of the Web history as the only person Live Tweeting the Abbottabad operation which involved US armed forces and the Pakistani Intelligence Service killing Osama Bin Laden. The guy is an IT consultant and was probably on a break in the quite of Abbottabad. But things changed and I am sure the atmosphere will not be as peaceful in the city as it had been.

Following are a few tweets he sent last night. Thanks to TC for compiling these up.

image thumb13 EduTecher, Bringing Academics To The Web EduTecher is a free social web resource for teachers and students.  Users are encouraged to explore, share, and contribute links and descriptions of free web tools that will be useful in an academic setting. Guess this isn’t a new bit as everyone is on the lookout for online tools to make life easier.

EduTecher enables teachers to create personal learning networks and connect with other users. Just like any social network it is a way to connect with people and tools that are more academic in nature, allowing members to post their own blog or participate in forums all focused around the successful implementation of educational technology. The idea as I see it, is to get the academics more closely associated to the Internet and Web, from their blog:

image thumb9 OpenNearMe: Know What Is Open Near You And Avoid The Hassle

I think the worst thing to happen is that you step out of your house to buy something and all you get to see is a huge Closed sign slapped on the door. You always have the phone to call up and check before you leave, but is there any other smarter way? I mean you can’t just call up all super stores one by one and with the Web so evolved, one would rather resort to using the Internet for such needs.

OpenNearMe is a new startup that resolves the same issue. It simply indexes all the markets, stores, eating places, in short everything within its database and lets you know what place near you is open. It saves time, listing only places that are nearby on a neat map so that you are also able to make a better decision on selecting the nearest to your location.

image thumb100 Infograph: 44% Of All Online Sharing Is Via Facebook!

I somehow find it more interesting to share infographic on numbers and trends and I bet many of our readers have come across numerous graphs. The most recent caught my eye on what platform are people using the most on the Web for sharing.

Not surprisingly Facebook takes the lead here and I am not at all surprised with the stats released by AddThis, a widget that you see installed across numerous sites to make sharing across numerous platforms easy. The AddThis widget is installed across 7 million plus domains and has support for over 300 services.  According to the latest trends released over 44% of all sharing activity online occurs on Facebook, which is over 33% what it was last year.

I sort of agree with the pictorial definition of the Web Developers and Web Designers. Though there have been instances when things have been the other way round for each of them.

Are you a Web Designer or a Developer? What are your opinions about the two?

image thumb19 iOS 6 Times Larger Than Android in Internet Browsing, Even Linux

Apple grabs another position and this time it’s the iOS that has become the third most popular platform on the Internet. Google has a big mountain for the Android platform to climb as the iOS is nearly 6 times as big as the Android. Surely the popularity of the iOS has grown and with every other release and update it continues to become stronger. Oh and did I mention it has crawled past Linux too?

The popularity doesn’t surprise me at all given that the iOS deserves it by all means. What does surprise me is the fact that it powers only 3 products, the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad, which leaves it quite a limited number of options when it comes to hardware. The Android on the other hand has the HTC, Motorola and Samsung, all releasing Android based mobiles in bulk, so much that there is not a month when there is no new upcoming Android phone.

image thumb17 The Censorship Stronger In China As FourSquare Got Blocked Over Tiananmen Anniversary

While back in Pakistan, I was busy with the Cyclone threat from Phet that had been building up, China found itself blocking yet another website. This time it is the ever growing Foursquare and the reason for the block is Tiananmen Square.

The ban was initiated on June 4 as the the country was set to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the event when 3,000 protesters, which included students were massacred by the Chinese government. According to the law in the communist state, it is forbidden to discuss about the incident in the country and the Internet is to obey the same rules. The censoring of the site is not a new one, given that even Google obeyed the country’s law and kept search results in strict compliance to the government. Even access to Twitter was blocked last year for the same reasons.

I seriously don’t want to imagine the world without Internet, primarily because it would cut me off from the entire world and blogging. The second reason being it would make my job as a researcher in my channel a very tiring task. No matter what horror it brings for us all, some find it pretty useful to think over and actually produce segments. I particularly liked the way how it has been put up, especially the Facebook guy. Watch the video below and let us know what your life will be if there was no Internet in comments.
