Bit.ly has gained a lot of popularity, thanks to its problem free service and becoming the default link cruncher for Twitter. The URL shortening service has shortened its already shortened service even more. The new branding puts bit.ly as j.mp saving you an additional two characters. Well sounds justified given that every character counts on Twitter and it offers nothing extra apart from the name and use the same credentials that you have for Bit.ly. Bit.ly, the URL shortener has grown by leaps and bounds, especially after Twitter adopted it as its default URL shortener. To be honest the service has done all the hard work at efficiently handling the load of shortening URLs on Twitter which is why it is expanding. The service is releasing new APIs plus new partnerships that are under way. Talking about partnerships, I bet Bit.ly is going to get a huge boost with Google Reader as it readily uses it for shortening URLs. That’s just one side of the picture, there are more services that continue to leverage the link shortener, namely CBS, SixApart for its TypePad all the way to Mozilla building up a retweet button using Bit.ly to shorten links.
