How do you feel when you find something that is legally yours missing? I will be angry, to put it simply and I bet many Kindle owners were too when they found George Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm missing from their devices. Amazon deleted copies of those books from users’ Kindle library, it wasn’t any legal issue but simply that the publisher didn’t want to put those books as Kindle editions. However Amazon has made it clear that in future it will not resort to remotely deleting the copies on their own. This raises a question about ownership rights and how ownership varies between the two.

Looks like Amazon feels that it should be a bit humble as it cuts Kindle 2 price from $359 to $299. We aren’t sure why Amazon is slashing that price (not that we aren’t glad it did)? Amazon had been generating quite a lot from the sales of the device with earnings closing in on a $100 Million, meaning that people didn’t mind paying the amount for the device. The Kindle DX is still priced at $489 and we would really want a cut in the DX’s price. As for who paid $359 for Kindle 2 a couple days back we can only sympathize with them.
At first it was just the App Store that did all the banning and removal of apps, all by itself but that changes as Amazon jumps in to play its part. Reports state that the Delicious Library iPhone app has been removed from the App Store. The removal comes around owing to the change in Amazon’s Product Advertising API and this only targets the mobile devices. We aren’t sure if Amazon makes any changes to this as it has denied making any exceptions to the terms.
Image recognition startup, SnapTell that lets users identify products has been acquired by Amazon’s A9. The terms and finances for the deal remain undisclosed. The startup utilizes visual product search technology and enables users to identify any product by simply taking a photo of any item; books, DVDs, etc and then extracts the items’ rating and price from online services like Amazon, Google to name a few. With a database of over 5 million and an app for the iPhone to do the business, SnapTell is definitely a must have tool for all shopping enthusiasts.
It appears cloudy weather has affected the cloud services as Toodledo and Amazon’s ES2 servers suffered prolonged outages. The problem with Amazon’s EC2 servers was due to a lightning strike, due to which the service was out for longer than three hours. Likewise Toodledo, a free online to-do list service, had its datacenter hit by a storm, forcing the service to run on backup power. The site is still in trouble as its team tries to bring the service back online. While the idea of cloud computing sounds very pleasing as it guarantees availability of data anywhere, but if such an event occurs one can guess the drastic effect it may have on everyone utilizing the facility. Of course, companies/services will devise better and much efficient ways for backup and restore, but the outage would still effect everyone badly.
