The T-Mobile/Google’s conference for the G1 website launch, discussing the phone’s features and overall capabilities with the media happened today. Cole Brodman, CTO & CIO for T-Mobile, carried out the proceedings stating the obvious that technology has bridged the gap of people not being able to communication easily. Andy Rubin (Senior Director, Mobile Platforms) and Peter Chou (CEO, HTC) were also present at the conference. As previously covered, you’re now able to watch the launch proceedings on T-Mobile’s G1 website.

G1 is being launched on both sides of the Atlantic, and expected in Europe as well. G1 enables superior user experience, and is a pioneer approach to open up the wireless Internet. The phone costs from $179.99 to $399.99, it’s locked in the T-Mobile network and it requires a 2-year subscription and a data plan that costs $25 or $35. T-Mobile customers from the US can pre-order the phone from today, though the phone won’t be available before October 22. T-Mobile promises to launch G1 in the UK one month later and in the first quarter of 2009 throughout Europe.

Okay so a quick go-through over the features discussed: To start off, the user interface is pretty slick; G1’s slide-out keyboard sets it apart from the iPhone, the touch screen is cool, with features just like the iPhone. You can view google maps; there’s also a compass mode in street view. Oh and Facebook also looks good in the browser, while there’s also a dedicated search button on the keyboard. The phone has a 3G version, and will also have WiFi.

Asked if the phone will use the Chrome browser, Rubin answered that it is Chrome-like, based on the same underlying technology. Although Chrome is for desktop and our browser is for the mobile device. The GTalk implementation will assure that online presence is guaranteed, so you don’t have to be ‘away’ anymore.
