Wear your long coats, sun glasses and hats. If you’re a stalker that is. All your stalking dreams can come true, without crossing any legally prescribed boundaries at Whrrl. Whrrl has made a partnership with HBO to place various fictional characters from the TV Entourage as real users on its network.
Whrrl is a location based social network and lets you see where your friends are on a map and their activities in real time. You can share you experiences or discovers places and events using Whrrl. It is also available as an iPhone App for free in the App Store.
With the deal between Whrrl and HBO, events from the Entourage will appear as annotated items on Whrrl’s maps. Any of the characters can be subscribed to and his items will appear in your friend feed. As an example, you can find out where Ari, a character from Entourage makes his infamous movie deals for his star client, Vince.
This is a very cool step in social marketing. We can see this expanding on to MySpace and other social networks shortly, if it catches on. A glimpse of this was already seen on Facebook, where a fictional character Roland Wacker takes Internet Explorer 8 beta 2 for a spin. Such promotions do attract a lot of users, and could potentially benefit advertisers and marketers alike.
