Social Networks in the U.S are all ups and downs: Hitwise

Eric Eldon reports about Hitwise’s analytics on the top 5 social networks ranked according to the Market Share in the U.S market.

There can be quite a lot drawn out from the analytics the most prominent being the snail paced growth of Facebook from July to August; where the share increased marginally by a little over 1%. This compared to last year share; which was a a little over 13%, reads an overall change of 50%. The rapid increase in Facebook’s pageviews/usage is primarily due to the large number of third party applications that it has made available.

However the more interesting fact is that there has been a fall in the number of pageviews and apparently the reason being its redesign. There has been unrest amongst Facebook users who have not really  adopted to the new design. The same factor might very well have caused a fall in MySpace’s pageviews by 10%. The pageviews decreasing due to the new design in Facebook is quite valid, as it removes the need for users to open links to access various parts of one profile (notifications, applications, etc).

So does MySpace has anything else apart from being the leading Social Network in the U.S? It does, the average time spent on MySpace by its users (a little under 31 minutes) is almost twice that Facebook users spend (around 20 minutes). It’s a bit of surprise as users of other networks that fall Facebook have their users spending more time on the site.

What we look forward is the impact MySpace Music will have on these analytics and those to come. The idea of letting every user in the U.S play streaming music may very well win MySpace more users as well as improve the social network’s overall response.
