Smash your feeds at SmashingFeeds

Smashing Feeds Logo You must have visited hundreds of sites in order to depreciate you hunger for news. While doing so, you have to log on to different sites, which may frustrate you, specially when you don’t have a hi-fi internet speed. This makes you dream about a site where you can have all the news you want. Well, its not a dream anymore, check out Smashing Feeds. It is a news aggregator that provides you variety of news. It is a platform where you can get all the news.

According to the site owner, Kevin, Google AJAX feed API is used by the site for feed creation and management. There are other sites providing same services like FeedzZ but this one is different from them. There are certain things which differentiates them from others which are:

  • No need to register.

  • Feeds on various Categories of your interest.

  • Selected blog sources to maintain the quality of information.

  • Fast display compare to feed aggregators (based on my personal experience).

  • Display headlines and few words of details rather than entire story. This will save your time.

  • Easily accessible.

Smashing Feeds toggle option When you access any specific section of the news or homepage of the site, you will see various drop down menus containing name of the news source at the top. You can toggle on/off a drop down menu by clicking on it or all the menus by clicking on the ‘-’ sign at the upper right side of the site.

Feeds which are added here includes technology, business, Google, entertainment, politics, health, travel and a lot more. The website doesn’t only contain news, but the source of that news is from authentic sites. For example in the Google news section, the news source is from Official Google Blog, Google Inside, Google Blogoscoped, etc. which are all authentic sources.

The site is functioning fine but there are a few things that can be improved. The Google ad which is appearing on the top of the site isn’t portraying a good image as it is blocking the content of the website. What they should do is that they can move those ads at the bottom of the site, doing this will make the content more visible.

Another problem which I saw was of scrolling, you have to scroll a lot if you wana read the content which is lying at the bottom. What they can do is that they can shrink up the content to the extent that it would decrease the scroll. This way people won’t get frustrated.

Also search option can be added so that people can see old news. There are a lot of people who don’t wana see all the news so a customisation option will be helpful which will let them choose news of their interest (this option would require registration).

Overall the website is great and I hope to see some more innovative stuff in the coming days from Kevin (though it might take a little more time as it is a one man show).
