Skype 4.0 out and about, Larger and Better!

Sardar Mohkim Khan

Some things make their way at the right time; just when the need for change is desperately required and so does Skype gets its major tune up: Skype 4.0. It has been tipped in as “the biggest new release in Skype’s history according to President Josh Silverman.

The software client that is set to release for Windows only today, covers the entire screen with video in front and centre. Silverman told Erich Schonfeld (TechCrunch) that: Skype

Our old UI was purpose built for voice

And with a full screen interface, the functioning has been made simpler and to be precise more visible, ridding it off the cluttery appearance that its ancestor had. It provides a video call button, plus the thumbnail (that shows the video) can be moved around along with a picture in picture function. That’s not it, Skype comes bundled with various other features that make it worth the wait and worthy of use.

The space for sending files or text chat has been expanded; the entire thing gives the user a very comforting feel of being in a video conference. Though Skype 4.0 can handle up to 25 active calls for voice, it only allows one to one video conference for the time being. It offers better hardware detection and tools for testing the connection. The chat conversations can easily be switched to and fro with consolidated tabs.

Skype currently has a user base of 309 million and is owned by eBay with revenues around $126 million in the first quarter. The Video communication, although it accounts for only 28% of total calls mad through Skype, has seen rapid growth owing it to the easy availability of built in cameras in devices that make every thing so mobile. There are talks about the company working in to develop features like, auto-redial, call transfer and something far more important; the ability to send money.

However things did turn out as a turn off for non Window users, the launch is only meant for Windows users. The software can be downloaded here.
