Scribd Will Definitely Make A Big Exit

Scribd a YCombinator funded company is making big splash recently. GigaOm is reporting that investors are jumping each other’s shoulders in order to put their money into this startup. According to Om a VC wanted to invest $5 million in the company at a valuation of $10 million, an offer the company passed. Redpoint Ventures however is rumored to have put in a substantial amount in the startup at a valuation of $20 million.

I wrote about Scribd previously in a post titled “Scribd is Youtube for Documents, Literally“, detailing how Scribd is a youtube for documents when it comes to community features, ease of use, sharing and embedding support and the ability for users to upload and enjoy copyrighted content.

Scribd’s team has used all of these things to their advantage. According to Marshall Kirkpatrick from Splashcast Media:

One thing Scribd is doing is hitting the front page of Digg with incredible frequency. They are posting really timely, funny, crowd-pleasing PDF content (who knew such a thing existed??) and they are getting piles and piles of Digg. We at SplashCast are using a similar strategy - using content delivered through our service to participate appropriately in social media conversations - but while we’re very proud of our 14 Digg front page appearances in the last 4 months, Scribd is the leading example of this tactic. They hit page one 9 times in one month and had more total diggs in that time period than all but 9 other domains on the web. (for stats see http://elfurl.com/qvabu )

Indeed the founders are really using all the special events to quickly post relevant documents on the site, and then hitting Digg’s frontpage in the process. But they are not alone in their efforts. Mashable posted the Law Suit against Statsaholic on Scribd and embedded it in the post to enable its users to easily go through the document. I posted the Google Analyst day presentation and embedded it in my post titled Google Web History, A Minority Report in the Making. People are embedding Scribd documents the same way the are embedding Youtube videos. Its just a matter of time for the service to hit mainstream. The traffic graphs are already telling the story of what is about to come.

Is Startup Meme some sort of shill site for Y-Combinator funded companies? Seriously, saying “X will definitely make a big exit” is such a joke. Scribd is another copyright violation mecca. Get real.

Jay I saw your comments on GigaOm on the Hitforge post, Is it a habbit to roam around blogs and post such comments or are you really serious about what you say ?

I could explain the reasons behind my statement, but who cares?
