Salesforce, one of the pioneers of Cloud Computing and Software as a Service metaphor was completely down for around 40 minutes yesterday. Although this is the first major blackout experienced Salesforce, the amount of downtime in a single day corresponds to almost half a decade when it comes to its 99.99% uptime guarantee.

How does the math work out that “the amount of downtime in a single day corresponds to almost half a decade when it comes to its 99.99% uptime guarantee?” That doesn’t even make sense.
Salesforce had 40 minutes down, which is .01% of 67 hours. This means that salesforce.com can have 40 minutes of downtime every 3 days and still maintain 99.99% uptime!
Compare this to the hours to days that onsite servers go down for scheduled maintenance, not to mention unscheduled downtime.
Don’t expect perfection – salesforce.com doesn’t pretend to offer perfection, as you yourself note. But they are doing far better than they promise to do, so give them credit for that.
