LA Times has reported of RushmoreDrive chanting slogans for a black Google. Now that doesn’t mean anyone’s heading off for a controversy but at a growing concern how Google ranks its pages and how the system pushes down searches that might be the priority o the rest of the population which isn’t white.
Johnny C. Taylor, who launched RushmoreDrive, a search engine that emphasis its targets at the black community makes sure that these users get what they want. As he mentioned to the LA Times:
a black person searching for “Whitney,” for instance, probably wouldn’t be looking for the Whitney Museum of Art, which comes up first on Google, or Whitney Bank, which comes up second. Instead, Taylor said, the searcher would likely be looking for Whitney Houston, who doesn’t come up in Google until No. 4. That’s why a search for “Whitney” on RushmoreDrive, which is part of Barry Diller’s IAC/InterActiveCorp conglomerate, turns up the vocalist as its first result.
Alright, pretty good, but how exactly is RushmoreDrive hot out what Afro-Americans want? He pointed out at carrying out an intensive research, by studying the Webbers going in areas with a larger lack population. This gave the site developers an idea to create an algorithm that gives priority to black links. Pretty neat, Taylor added:
It’s a blend. Results that otherwise would be much lower are elevated.
But wait; there is a problem in that, the system that is. It says RushmoreDrive functions like every other search engine; learning from the clicks made by users and giving priority to the most ‘clicked’ result. It is the same problem that occurred as more users accessed white pages resulting in the suppression of the results it is meant to work for.
So what is the solution for this? Taylor pops out with a publicity tour and awareness appearances on various shows, which to us sounds like a pre-historic method, but it shows what limit Taylor is up to hit in order to have something for the black population. What we look up to is how successful this turns out to be, plus we can all use another search engine to offer us more variety.
