RockYou raises $35 million

RockYou Logo The creator of SuperWall and Likeness applications (usually seen on social networks), RockYou, has raised $35 million in a venture funding round which was led by DCM. According to company spokesperson the previous investors (Partech, Lightspeed and Sequoia) also participated in the round. Previously the company had raised around $10 million to $15 million, though the company is yet to confirm the specific amount.

The raised money may bring company’s estimation under rival widget maker Slide which was $550 million in its last $50 million round from two private equity funds, which also was less than $50 million- $70 million on a $400 million valuation that RockYou was apparently seeking.

According to RockYou, it contains 87.5 million monthly uniques and 2.7 billion page views through out its network. The company justifies the raise by saying that it wants to hire, expand advertising and publisher offerings, and add more applications. That is certainly not a bad idea specially at a time when Slide has announced that it is done with Facebook application.

Competition between these two companies is huge and you can’t get a word out of Lance Tokuda (RockYou CEO) until he gives some thought about Slide. To some extent he is right as Slide executives have admitted that some of their features were inspired by RockYou. Both are giving tough time to each other but RockYou has a little edge over Slide as it is about to expand its services at a time when Slide is not doing that good(done making facebook applications).
