image thumb84 Review Nokia X6: A Great Music Device And Shows That Nokia Is Serious About ‘Touch Screen’

I have been in possession of the Nokia X6 for quite some time now and honestly the device is one step up from its predecessor, the 5800 Xpress Music and many steps below its really impressive N-Series, especially the N97. I am not sure what exactly is wrong here, but Nokia is failing to make a mark with smoothness.

The device has a sleek design, and the right weight to qualify it as a decent touch-screen device. Honestly, the 5800 Xpress Music was a big fail, a highly resistive touch screen, an undesirable light weight and there was an absence of that ‘thing’ which made the device really useful. No offense to Nokia and with all due respect, that device was a fail. The X6 is an evolution, a pretty good evolution to put it appropriately but it still doesn’t qualify to compete in the race of Smartphones. Lets talk about, in a bit detailed way.

The Capacitive Touch Screen

Put to great use, given how Nokia is still finding it hard to amalgamate the technology of capacitive touch with its Symbian OS. The methodology has evolved big time, but it is a bit irritating at times. Why so? For example certain options or applications open on a single tap, which can be as sensitive as a finger swipe to scroll the screen and at others you have to apply a drumstick method to double tap for an option to open, which somehow ends up irritating you, well at least me for one.

The other thing, it has a brilliant 3.2 inch screen, which initially made me feel that this really is going to make typing with touch a lot easier, since it had no keyboard. But I was a bit lost, the touch type- interface gives you a really sensitive keyboard, BUT the display screen to see your typed text is awfully small. Why? I have no clue.

Many would sprint up and state that this isn’t the device for the purpose of typing a novel and that I must get a netbook or a more advanced device like the N900, but hey I used the N97 and it had the same micro-screen and the only reason why I still love the device is because it had a physical keyboard as well. The point of taking out a physical keyboard should be to make touch/tap typing easier and more accommodating for users. In this case it just wasn’t the case.

The Camera

A 5 Mega Pixel Carl Zeiss lens with flash gives you the right thing to take photographs. Again it is just like the 5 MP camera on your N97 BUT the results are just a bit different, the N97 had a more crisp image quality which the X6 doesn’t have. Maybe I don’t qualify to be a remotely good photographer, but I have some sense on quality, perhaps its display on the phone screen, or something, but the quality lacks a bit.

The Music

Awesome, I must give credit where it is due and if you are looking forward to a great music device, it is the right choice for you. The sound is way better than what I experienced with the N97. It has got two inbuilt stereo speakers that provide an excellent sound quality. Add to that a storage of 16 / 32 GB, large enough to satisfy the most crazy of music lovers and the ability to download a countless tracks, you have a massive music device at your hand, which serves all the purpose.

Oh and you have a pretty decent pair of headphones boasting the standard 3.5mm jack to keep music to your ears only.

The Ovi Suite

That brings me to its Nokia Ovi Suite, its syncing software which honestly has been improving over time. It lets you easily download music tracks from Nokia’s Music Store. Music isn’t all there, the Ovi Store offers or should I say gives apps for Nokia a great place to be, something which had been lacking in the past. Other than that the X6 offers you a more direct access to the store via widgets on its home screen.

The only problem I face is with syncing the Ovi calendar with others like Google Calendar, given that almost everyone uses that by default. But I guess that is bound to improve as Nokia gets more into building devices that are less corporate in design and usability.

Overall

5 Stars for Music

3 Stars for Usability: includes responsiveness, features, design

4 Starts for Camera

4 Stars for Pricing

I personally think that the device is the right option if you are a music lover and that the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music was a huge disappointment. The X6 is a massive improvement for all at a pretty affordable price and useful additional features. To wrap it up, it appears that Nokia is pretty serious about resolving the Touch Screen issue with its devices in a bid to make them look more appealing to its consumers, a bit late, but hey Nokia fans would love it.
