It appears that almost every media company has decided to bite everything that has anything to do with media sharing etc. Services like MuxTape have already taken the brunt and presently RealDVD, within moments after its launch has fallen prey to Hollywood’s concerns regarding the effect it can have on the industry.
RealNetworks has reportedly filed a suit against various parties, including DVD Copy and Control Association, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures and Disney. RealNetworks claims that RealDVD does nothing to do with affecting the industry and it fully complies with the license agreement of the DVD Copy and Control Association.
The software that was made available earlier last month has went live on sales at RealDVD is available for $30 and has immediately been termed as StealDVD. The term had ben coined by Greg Goeckner, general counsel for Motion Picture Association of America, who also stated:
RealNetworks knows its product violates the law and undermines the hard-won trust that has been growing between America’s movie makers and the technology community.
Interesting enough, I wonder if this is eventually going to push all services into the box. RealNetworks in its own statement said:
We are disappointed that the movie industry is following in the footsteps of the music industry and trying to shut down advances in technology rather than embracing changes that provide consumers with more value and flexibility for their purchases.
I guess been disappointed isn’t really going to help RealNetworks,but if it can pull something positive out of this lawsuit, things may very well improve for other such (more legal) service.
