Rackspace a pioneer in web hosting has decided to expand its roots by acquiring SliceHost and JungleDisk. SliceHost provides cloud computing services to its 15,000 users while JungleDisk is a popular online backup service. The acquisition comes with Rackspace’s idea to move over to the dimension of cloud computing and JungleDisk would provide support to Rackspace’s cloud storage.
There were other announcements as well about new services and these included the Cloud Hosting service. The service would integrate a hosting platform with the storage solution providing users with more alternates in the cloud storage business.
According to CenterNetworks, Rackspace has renamed its initial service; the Cloud FS to Cloud Files and the Hosting Cloud to Cloud Sites. The Cloud Files would provide developers easy access to a better storage medium along with cutting down costs. The service charges are quite similar to what Amazon has to offer but the pricing associated with data transfer might just cost a bit more.
SliceHost was more vocal about the current acquisition, stating:
We believe that Slicehost and Rackspace are fantastic complements to each other. Our technology strengthens their position in the cloud hosting world. Their expertise, experience and resources enable us to improve our product and continue meeting our customers’ needs.
Well I guess Rackspace has taken up the task of moving with the trend, who knows the concept of powerful desktops and storage solutions be overtaken by the Cloud.
