For those of you who have been waiting to hear from the iPhone Dev Team regarding the PwnageTool 4.2, there’s a good news. The dev team has released the official version of the PwnageTool 4.2. The release will include the kernel based GreenPois0n exploit to help with a complete untethered iOS 4.2.1 firmware files.
The release will support all iOS devices other than the iPod Touch 2G. If your iPhone needs a carrier unlock you must use the PwnageTool 4.2 to create the custom firmware files. There is no need to have upgraded baseband and the unlock can be made using your old baseband with the Ultrasn0w version. You will however be needing IPSW files on the iOS 4.2.1 wherever they are needed.
We came across this video from Stephen Chi who has shared the step by step guide for jailbreaking the iPhone using the PwnageTool 4.2.

I tried PwnageTool 4.2 and after installation on Iphone 3G, Cydia crashes. I tried multiple times with different options of packages and same result every time. Any ideas?

Hi Startup Meme, I fixed by doing Deselect All, Activate Phone, No Wallpaper, No Multitasking. Basically, I used the default values. It worked like a charm. If you have an ftp site I can upload the resulting IPSW file.

Hey can someone help me…I went through these steps and the jailbreak my iPhone 3gs and they worked very well. I’m having trouble with the unlock. I unlocked the phone with ultrasnOw 1.2 and restart the phone, inserted my ATT sim card. The phone searches for a signal for a while and then says “NO SERVICE” is there any other way to unlock this phone?
I am trying to unlock it because I have a WP7 (Samsung Focus) and i can’t use the internet on the iphone when i switch the sim cards out.

Can I use this procedure to have untethered-jailbreak and unlock on my iphone 4 that was already jailbroken and unlocked (tethered) using redsnow and cydia?
