With the print media slowly decaying, American Journalism’s highest honor, The Pulitzer Prize makes an important announcement; online only newspapers will be eligible for the Prize. So what exactly is online-only publication?  The press release stated:

all entered material — whether online or in print — should come from United States newspapers or news organizations that publish at least weekly, that are "primarily dedicated to original news reporting and coverage of ongoing stories," and that "adhere to the highest journalistic principles.

Original news reporting, meaning blogs don’t stand much of a chance here. However this expansion in the Prize’s categories is a milestone in the importance of the Web in journalism, something that will eventually be the mainstream platform for all news as print media loses ground. When exactly does this happen remains to be seen. The submission deadline for the content published before December 31, 2008 is February 1, 2009.
