Postful, a service that launched in private beta last, allows users to send snail mail via email. All you need to do is send an email to quickletter@postful.com, put an address in the subject line and hit the send button.
The service might seem odd to a few, but it really is a brilliant idea, because there is a huge population that just don’t get ‘Web2.0′ or even can’t use computers, where as a growing population comprises of people who are sucked in by their PC’s and just can’t live without them. The service bridges the communication gap between these two generations and does so in an intuitive way. The service also removes the hassle’s of writing on paper, buying and putting stamps, putting it in envelopes and finally mailing it.
Postful also allows you to create a permanent email account for your frequent letters like “dad@postmail.com” and then you and your family could just send snail mails to him by sending emails on this address. Postful also offers developers an API to build useful services on top of this concept. You could also include photos, use rich text formatting and keep record of all your outgoing mail. The service might become extremely useful for some corporations who want to get out source their corporate mailroom entirely.
Remote Control Mail does exactly the same thing backwards i.e it allows you to access your snail mail on email. I think that both of these services have built half a bridge, and an integration of the two would surely make a great service.
