The demand for used PCs is soaring not because of the economy but because of the simple reason that many users and organizations are on the hunt for used PCs in order to run Windows XP. Organizations and individuals disposed off old PCs to get new ones because Windows Vista demanded more resources, but once that was done people got to realize that most of their software just dont run on Vista. So they are now on the run to find old PCs with XP installed on it in order to run the softwares that they used to run.
According to PC World:
A lot of PCs have been disposed of because Microsoft’s Windows Vista OS has created a demand for PCs with greater hardware capabilities, according to a study released by Gartner on Tuesday. In 2007, about 197 million PCs were discarded, of which 44 percent were put up for sale secondhand.
Many consumers and businesses prefer used PCs with Windows XP because they still have older copies of software programs that often don’t run properly on new PCs running Vista, said David Daoud, research manager at IDC. For example, consumers may need to buy used PCs with Windows XP to run older accounting software that is incompatible with Vista.
What a mess Microsoft has created, I wonder if any other organization is even capable of pulling a similar stunt.
