PC Magazine which was founded by Ziff Davis in 1982 will issue its last print edition in January 2009, after which the technology magazine would become an online-only publication. Ziff Davis has recently avoided bankruptcy and will be laying off 7 print production employees, the company was not always in this sort of a crisis, and at one time it used to have so much ads that the magazine had to be stuffed with around 600 pages to meet the demand.
So what exactly happened to PC Magazine, well Gizmodo and Engadget happened. PC Magazine will now have an online network of sites which will include ExtremeTech, Gearlog, Appscout, Smart Device Central, GoodCleanTech, DL.TV, Cranky Geeks, and PCMagCast. Some revenue figures for the mag from Paid Content:
- PCMag revenues are "in the tens and tens of millions of dollars"
- Online reveneues grew an average of 42% since 2001.
- Digital already accounts for 70% of the PC Mag brand’s revenues.
- The network is profitable.
- PCMag brand revenues grew 18% in Q3.
