I won’t turn out Palm Pre and its App Catalog out, especially if it boasts having close to 2 million apps being downloaded. Primarily because there are only a very few apps to choose from and an equally low number of devices being sold. There is no need to compare it with the iPhone or the Android based phones for they have been in the race for longer than Palm Pre (smartphones), but Palm is taking a step to make things better as it opens up its App Catalog, enabling anyone to use the Mojo SDK to develop apps. The opening of the app platform to developers has had a lot of success as witnessed with Apple’s App Store, but on the down side only a few of the 65,000 apps have been very successful. Palm on the other hand will have a much better App download ratio, which should be taken as encouraging. Let’s see how the App Catalog gets along with this and what sort of apps we see.
