San Francisco based startup OpenDNS is the largest and fastest growing DNS service provider. The company was founded by Minor Ventures and David Ulevitch initially in 2006 to protect users from phishing and malware sites. Not being one of the friendlier services the users need to optimize it by configuring their system settings to have it functioning but once done it is hardly ever noticed performing its tasks.
The interesting thing about the site is that if a user tries to access or clicks a link that fall in any of the 50 pre-defined categories, he/she is directed to the homepage of OpenDNS that includes contextual ads and search results. The site has gained widespread popularity.
The categories can be customized to suite the needs of organizations and the free registration process make it more useful. There is absolutely no limit as to how many users are set up with a single account that is registered account. According to Michael Arrington, the site currently houses 500,000 of such registered accounts. With more than 7 billion queries resolved on a daily basis with services to about 2 million search pages. The site earns revenue from these search pages that amounts to about $20,000 daily.
The revenue generated is utilized for offering these services for free making it a possibility for organizations to avail such facilities without the need to pay bills to obtain them. That’s not it, OpenDNS also has its own community that is used to help it out with new features and identify new malware sites. If a site is blacklisted by a user, others are asked to verify it and once confirmed the site hits the blacklist category.
The service as has been mentioned is of great use for places like schools, offices where a check needs to keep on the activity of the users. With OpenDNS such a problem can be kept at bay.
