NASA lately succeeded in conducting its first deep space communication in line with the Internet. Engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory used the Disruption Tolerant Network (DTN) to transfer space images between the lab and the spacecraft some 20 million miles from Earth. According to NASA the protocol had been designed in collaboration with Vint Cerf, vice president of Google. Manager of DTN Experiment Operations Center at the Lab, Leigh Torgerson stated:
In space today, an operations team must manually schedule each link and generate all the commands to specify which data to send, when to send it, and where to send it.
