MySpace is refurbishing its site to attract more users. The formal version will be out by next week (Monday), said a company representative. Though the features will be available from Wednesday.
The new redesign which took more than six weeks, will have better search options, an updated profile editor, a new navigation bar/tool (which will allow easy messaging) and a better MySpaceTV player.
MySpace search is widely altered as it allows its members to navigate through different tabs which include personal profiles, music profiles, videos on MySpaceTV, MySpace site or the whole web. When searched, the most relevant tab will automatically highlight. It also allows you to filter your search by age, gender or location.
According to MySpace co-founder and president Tom Anderson
We felt like we reached a point where MySpace in its original incarnation had peaked in a way.
We were wondering how we can expand our market and appeal to new people. We looked at some of the reasons why someone might not use MySpace.
MySpaceTV player, which is competing with the likes of YouTube, has improved by providing support to high definition video. Also the full screen mode has been improved as part of Flash 9 release. The embeddable player, now contains internal search and also has the view of top videos.
MySpace which has also worked with Lucene open source search engine project, has plans to lessen the number of ads with expectation of higher priced premium stand out.
Meanwhile Facebook, the competitor of MySpace is also going through a redesign phase.
Only redesigning or changing interfaces is not going to catch more users. Although it is a way to attract people, they should focus more on features that will satisfy users and fulfil their needs like they have done on searching and on MySpaceTV. If they keep on updating features like these, they will be at the top for sure.
