MySpace might have lost the number one place to Facebook, but they aren’t giving up yet. They have also released their iPhone application to compete with Facebook in the mobile market ( or shall we say the iPhone market! ). MySpace has reported an explosive increase in mobile traffic, crossing 2.5 billion page views in May compared to the 1.4 billion page views in March. This is why MySpace can recover lost market share in the mobile space.
MySpace App is free to download from the App Store. The interface blends in with the iPhone really well. Also some of the distinguished features of this App are:
-
Camera integration and optimized photo management allowing users to snap, sort and upload pictures anytime and anywhere.
-
The ability to stay connected with friends through a full messaging interface.
-
Pinch, flick and swipe your way through the MySpace navigation using standard iPhone touch support.
-
Real-time friend, status and mood updates.
-
Feedback mechanism letting users contribute to future iterations of the product.
-
Available in 12 languages by the end of this month.
According to VentureBeat
Released in October, MySpace’s mobile site (WAP) (http://m.myspace.com) gets more than 1.7 million daily unique mobile visits in the United States alone, after breaking 1 million in March. The site is seeing 250,000 additional uniques every month.
Also some stats
MySpace is working with all major mobile operators as well as major manufacturers including Nokia and Samsung who have built their own custom communities based on MySpace. MySpace Mobile has 27 signed carrier/operator deals in 20 countries globally.
Mobile advertisers in U.S.: Ford, Saturn, Warner Brothers and Toyota. Advertisers in Europe: Coca Cola, Warner Brothers and Nike.
Sponsorship and CPM campaigns are sold by dedicated FIM sales teams in several of our 29+ territories. Third party ad networks also serve mobile ad campaigns into MySpace Mobile.
Although, even the launch of a MySpace App wont just give it back its number 1 spot in the social networking market, as Facebook is already there. And with Facebook’s increasing number of users, there’s not doubting the fact that it can easily rule the mobile arena too. The chat feature of Facebook does give it an upper hand against MySpace. This has also been pointed out by Paul Glazowski in Battle of the iPhone Apps: MySpace vs Facebook at Mashable
As far as mobile usage with either social network is concerned, they were all but neck-and-neck prior to the debut of their respective iPhone applications. MySpace claims to have served some 1.7 million “daily unique mobile visits, while Facebook reports having seen regular use by some 1.5 million people. These numbers certainly have no bearing on the qualitative properties of the networks’ native iPhone offers introduced today. But if I’m to hazard a guess about which download takes off more strongly in the coming weeks, Facebook will probably hit the right spot for more people. Support for Facebook Chat is quite a debut, after all.
This definitely wont favor MySpace in the long run, and in only a short time we will have a clear winner in the mobile social networking market. We think that it’ll be Facebook, any other guesses?? Anyone?
