MySpace has officially launched the Data Availability Project. It will allow its users to make MySpace core of their online activity. The Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) can be used by developers to get their hands on MySpace user data on other sites. These APIs are available at the developer site of MDP.
According to MySpace’s Rhonda:
As the developer of an independent website you can now enable your users to leverage the power of their social data outside of the MySpace.com domain. Our users spend hours updating and making changes to their profiles, uploading content, and building friend relationships. With your help that data can now be available to MySpace users no matter where they go on the internet.
If someone uploads a snap on MySpace, it will automatically be available on other photo-sharing sites. Profile data of MySpace can also be imported on different forums like Twitter. Though MySpace initiated the application, they are not the only ones in this race, Facebook and Google are also up with their Facebook Connect and Google Friend Connect respectively.
With this application, third party sites would be able to get a doorway to user’s public profile information, photos and friend networks. This kind of data sharing needs high security and MySpace is fully committed in enforcing its Terms and conditions with other sites.
For security and privacy, it allows users to organise the data i.e. the option which lets the choose what data they want to make available and what to keep private.
On security, Rhonda said:
We’ve also taken steps to ensure that none of this new functionality compromises any of our user’s privacy or security. You will find a new 3rd party site privacy dashboard located in the account settings of your MySpace profile. Just look under Linked Sites to view it. From here users can manage the relationship between their data and individual 3rd party sites. Any revocation of access to data from within MySpace takes place immediately at the external site as well. This ensures users won’t have their data floating around the internet without them being aware of it.
