It all started when last year Automattic’s Matt Mullenweg declared non-GPL licensed themes on WordPress Themes directory unfit, and started his campaign against them. WordPress has since then removed over 200 themes from the directory for the sole reason that there had been lots of link-back going on- link-back to sites and people that created them.
What is unfair is the fact that Mullenweg’s crash list is also effecting people who simply link back to themes that they themselves make. Having taken care of non-GPL (open source) themes, Mullenweg aims at open source themes that are involved in the link back ‘crime’ – and that’s 35% of the themes on the WordPress too.
