We had earlier talked about Mozilla bringing geo-location named Geode to the browser that would help enhance browsing experience by using the physical location of a use, has been released and is available for download here. The project is more like predecessor of the new W3C Geolocation Specification; a feature that adds the ability for web sites to request and users to grant access to their location
The service is set to be based on various methods; the GPS or the WiFi based entry method. The i0dea is to let users get a feel of geo-location before Mozilla comes out with its prime W3C Geolocation. The purpose to let developers experiment and explore location awareness.
When a web page requests your location a bar drops down that asks how much information can be sent to the site; be it your neighbourhood, city or absolutely nothing. Then using Skyhook’s Loki Technology, users locations is mapped using the WiFi signals within your area. So you have better functionality, with a second to lock your position with an accuracy of 10-20 meters compared to GPS that can take up to a minute to lock your location.
Fire Eagle and Pownce are two launch partners for the positioning tool with the plugin integrated into their service. Pownce is set to add location data to messages while Fire Eagle would use the same to pull location information for the users and the types of services they currently use.
Although this isn’t the first of its kind, Google had earlier rolled out a similar plugin within the Google Gears. However it would be great if Mozilla comes out with Fennec and integrate the plugin for enhanced user experience and can definitely fare well with the mobile devices.
