As my colleague, Mohkim reported earlier that Microsoft announced at the PDC that it will be releasing Office14 both on the desktop and on the web. As part of the next release of Office, lightweight versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote – through a browser will be released. With these new applications, people can use a browser to create, edit, and collaborate on Office documents. What’s great is that this provides a consistent Office experience when and where our customers want it, regardless of whether they are accessing their Office documents through the PC, phone, or browser.
The office on the web will be released on Microsoft existing online beta platform Officelive. Microsoft is currently running it’s office live workspace platform which helps user view documents and synchronize and collaborate in teams, groups with nifty feature in the workspace. You can check it out at www.workspace.officelive.com.
Floowing that Microsoft will start the subscription based services of the Office on the web, allowing PowerPoint, excel, Word and OneNote users to take advantage of the platform. But will subscription based services be successful?
Courtesy of Channel 9, here is a full video review of a running version the online office, demonstrating it’s fabulous feature.
Here is a screen shot of Word running on IE.

The question remains’, will Microsoft be successful in leading the online office market as it enjoys on the desktop, with Openoffice making ground on the desktop and likes of Zoho and Google Apps on the web, it will be very tough for Microsoft to retain it’s position and compete.
