Microsoft Corp. has announced its intention to acquire DATAllegro Inc., which is a breakthrough data warehouse appliances provider. If the deal is done, it will enhance the mission critical data platform ability of Microsoft. This will make it a lot easier and cost efficient for all sort of customers in order to control and get an insight from the amount of data produced by and for businesses, employees and consumers.

According to Microsoft’s corporate vice president of the Data and Storage Platform Division, Ted Kummert:

DATAllegro is a tremendously innovative company that has started to redefine the data warehouse market.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 delivers enterprise-class capabilities in business intelligence and data warehousing, and the addition of the DATAllegro team and its technology will take our data platform to the highest scale of data warehousing.

On the occasion, DATAllegro’s CEO, Stuart Frost, said:

Integrating DATAllegro’s nonproprietary hardware platform and flexible software architecture into Microsoft SQL Server will provide customers with the strongest offering in the market.

We are excited to join forces with Microsoft and continue the innovation this company was founded on.

DATAllegro has emerged as a high performance data warehouse which has gained speciality in large volumes where as the usual data warehouse appliance vendors are targeting a range of 1 to 25 Terabyte only. Currently the data warehouse’s appliance installations contain some of the largest data volume capacities in the business which includes 100s of Terabytes on a single system. Their clients are usually related to markets such as retail, telecommunications and marketing.

In a report of Gartner Inc.’s, Donald Feinberg said:

As data warehouses are becoming more strategic to organizations and as data warehouse appliances mature, the adoption rate of the data warehouse appliance is increasing rapidly.

Other than providing huge volume capability, the patent pending technology of DATAllegro is also suitable for complex workloads such as high concurrency and mixed queries.

If the acquisition is successful, Microsoft will retain most of the team of DATAllegro along with its headquarters in Aliso Viejo, California. Current consumers of the data warehouse will continue to get support.

According to Intel Capital’s managing director of the Software and Solutions Group, Lisa Lambert:

We are pleased to support DATAllegro’s pending acquisition.

DATAllegro’s integration with SQL Server is the optimal next-generation solution, and the acquisition by Microsoft is a great conclusion for the company.

Microsoft’s focal point is not just a database but a platform which will help all kind of customers with the ‘data explosion’ and let them have advantage of the upcoming generation of data driven applications.
